About
The Dovedale Towers , known locally as ‘The Dovey’, is a Penny Lane and South Liverpool institution, restored and re-imagined as the iconic Victorian pub it has always aspired to be.
In 2026 it was welcomed into the stable of the good folks of the ‘1936 Pub Company’ (see also ‘The Vines’, ‘The Monro’, ‘St Peter’s Tavern’ and fair few more), who have re-invigorated this grande dame of the Liverpool pub scene.
Starting life as St Barnabas church in the 19th century, the Dovey’s site has hosted performances by the Beatles (in their ‘Quarrymen’ era) and a young Freddie Mercury famously resided in a bedsit on an upper floor, overlooking Penny Lane. The conversion from previous uses (as a church and a school) was into a public house, in the late 1960s.
Today The Dovey overlooks a glorious beer garden, served 10 cask ales, and boasts one of the best pub whisky selections in the city. Its pub snacks and light bites are a bit special too.
